A quick guide

How fast will your car charge?

Most home EV charging happens overnight. The exact time depends on your vehicle, battery size and the charger your car can accept.

7kWTypically adds around 35–50 km of driving range per hour.
OvernightA practical home charge for most EV owners—from evening plug-in to morning departure.
22kWCan be faster, but only when the car, electrical supply and installation all support three-phase charging.

Common questions

Before you get started.

Do I need to upgrade my switchboard?

Not necessarily. We assess the existing switchboard, available capacity and protection requirements. If it is suitable, we can proceed with the charger installation. If an upgrade is needed, we explain why and provide clear pricing before the work begins.

What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase charging?

Single-phase home charging is commonly up to around 7.4kW. Three-phase charging can support higher output, often up to 22kW, but only when the vehicle and property supply support it. Actual charging speed depends on the car as well as the charger.

Can I charge my EV from rooftop solar?

Yes, with a compatible solar-management charger and correctly configured system. Chargers such as Zappi and some Wallbox models can help use available excess solar, subject to the charger, inverter, vehicle and installation setup. Solar charging is not automatically available on every installation.

Will I receive an electrical safety certificate?

Where required for the electrical work, Electrical3 will complete the applicable NSW electrical safety certification and provide the customer copy. Installations are carried out by licensed electricians in accordance with applicable Australian electrical requirements, including AS/NZS 3000.

The Sydney savings comparison

The maths makes sense: fuel vs. home charging.

Why home charging can make sense: moving more of your vehicle charging to your driveway can reduce reliance on petrol and public charging. The payback period depends on your driving, vehicle, tariff, solar output and installation price—it is not guaranteed to be 6–12 months.

EV charging, made understandable

Before you choose a charger.

You do not need to know every technical detail. These are the four things that make the biggest difference to everyday home charging.

A useful starting pointMost people charge overnight.A typical 7kW home charger can add roughly 35–50km of driving range per hour. The car, battery and electrical supply determine the actual result.
1

Single or three phase?

Many homes use single-phase charging at up to about 7.4kW. Three-phase may allow up to 22kW, but only when both the car and charger can accept it.

2

Solar changes the choice

A solar-capable charger can use available excess rooftop generation. If you also have a home battery, we consider how the charger, battery and household energy system work together.

3

Your daily driving matters

The fastest charger is not always necessary. What matters is replacing the kilometres you normally drive before you next need the car.

4

A proper installation

The job can include a dedicated circuit, suitable protection, cable routing, mounting, testing and commissioning—not simply attaching a box to the wall.
